Healthy Child Allowance

5-11 Healthy Child Allowance

PURPOSE

1. To help families encourage their children to participate in arts, culture, sports and recreational activities.

PRINCIPLE

2. The benefits of growing up active and involved in community activities are well- documented.

3. Participation in sports, music and other organized activities helps build self-esteem, as well as social and leadership skills.

4. Such participation has added benefits for society such as increased education and employment rates, lower rates of youth who drop out of school, fewer teen pregnancies, and reduced rates of youth involvement in crime.

POLICY

5. Section 18 (f) of the Regulations provides for a Healthy Child Allowance of $107 per month per dependant minor child up to the age of 18 to facilitate access to cultural and recreational activities.

6. Consideration will be given to a child after the age of 18 and still attending high school on a full-time basis (not university or college).

7. A minor living apart, still in school, who qualifies for the school clothing allowance will also qualify for this allowance.

PROCEDURE

8. Receipts or verification of expenditures are not required.
